MISSION
This website’s mission is to create a historical document that illustrates New Orleans cultural relevance through a unique collection of personal anecdotes, press and images. Jazz, blues and folk-art will be ignored for the most part, though at times the index may encroach into that territory.
The New Orleans Index Project begins by listing the personal experiences of its creator, Ralph McGinnis, an artist who grew up in and around the French Quarter, who now lives between San Francisco and New York. However, The Index will expand to include listings representing the entire 20th century and the present as new material is contributed.
Copyrights on all images and text on The New Orleans Index Project are retained by their respective creators.

The Urban Conservancy
The Urban Conservancy is dedicated to research, education and advocacy that promote the wise stewardship of the urban built environment and local economies
The Neighborhood Story Project
The Neighborhood Story Project is a documentary book-making project in New Orleans, Louisiana. Through writing, interviews, and photography, neighborhood writers create portraits of our places, then edit the stories with the neighborhoods to make sure we get it right. We publish the books and have block parties to celebrate.
WWOZ
WWOZ is the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Station, broadcasting live from the famed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival annually. Our governance board is appointed by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Foundation. We are a listener-supported, volunteer-operated radio station, currently operating out of the French Market Corporation Offices.
THE NEW ORLEANS
INDEX PROJECT New Orleans is far more than jazz and gumbo – it's one of the most creative and vibrant cities in the world. People in New Orleans are concerned with living a pleasurable life and making art for the joy of creation rather than for fame and success. There is a secret history, which The New Orleans Index Project now documents.
